A belated Happy Holidays from the Philly DSA Bulletin Squad. When we last left off in the second week of December, Bernie was in second in most national polling averages (RealClearPolitics had him at 16%) and was just starting to show some early-state momentum; now, he’s up to 20% on RCP, he’s in first place in Iowa AND New Hampshire per CBS / YouGov, he outraised the field yet again ($34.5 million this quarter, over five million individual donations total), and he’s got skeptics from Yggy to Cillizza on their heels because, as every national publication suddenly realized over Christmas, “Bernie Sanders could actually win this thing.”
Could win is a long way from winning, though, and if you’ve been on the sidelines, watching the debates, doing Twitter threads about Joe Biden’s crimes, powerlessly watching poll numbers go up and down like weather reports… There’s never been a better time to get involved.
This Saturday at 12:00, at the First Unitarian Church, Philly DSA will be hosting a Bernie for President Policy and Organizing Training specifically designed to turn passive Bernie supporters into committed, trained organizers. Our all-volunteer Canvassing Committee, who have years of experience working on political campaigns and in the labor movement and who have already knocked thousands of doors for Bernie this cycle, will be on hand to walk you through the basics of an organizing conversation and teach you how to address common objections. Our Policy Committee will talk you through Bernie’s 2020 platform, training you to explain to your friends, neighbors, and coworkers why Bernie is the peace candidate, the healthcare candidate, the environmental candidate, the class struggle candidate, and, as more and more people are realizing, the electable candidate with the best chance at beating Trump.
The Iowa caucuses are a month away. Pennsylvania’s in April. If you want to make a difference, come out on Saturday. If you’ve been calling and canvassing already, bring a friend. We all know someone who’s on board with Bernie’s program but, for whatever reason, not yet involved. Now’s the time, folks!
NPC Statement on Iran
Philly DSA echoes the National Political Committee’s statement on the assassination of Iranian General Qassim Suleimani: “As democratic socialists, we reject further war, imperialism and militarism by our government. We oppose a war against Iran, and we call for the lifting of sanctions, the rejoining of the Iran Nuclear deal, and the removal of U.S. troops from Iraq.”
There is a national strategy call with Veterans for Peace’s Rory Fanning and Palestinian-American social justice advocate Linda Sarsour tonight at 8pm; RSVP here if you’d like to participate.
If your union does something cool between Bulletins, let us know on Facebook or Twitter! Also, if you’re a union member and a member of Philly DSA interested in getting involved with our Labor for Bernie work, please fill out this form.
