Whereas, the Democratic Socialists of America, an explicitly member-run, member-led organization, finds its greatest strength in the active participation and initiative of dues-paying rank-and-file members
Whereas, the time between general meetings makes it difficult to quickly coordinate responses to sudden developments
Whereas, the spaces available for open discussion among rank-and-file members are largely restricted to happy hours and periodic social events
Whereas, the absence of a forum for the open and substantive discussion of internal matters has periodically led to sensitive subjects being aired in unmoderated public fora such as Twitter or Facebook, to the detriment of Philly DSA’s reputation and morale
Whereas, the benefits of a Discourse forum include: strong moderation tools to cut down on abusive behavior and improve readability; taggable conversations; pinned announcements, and graduated user onboarding to allow users to learn the culture of our chapter beforeparticipating heavily
Therefore, be it resolved, that the local will establish an ad hoc Member Forum Committee, composed of Michele R , Khalil M, and Jesse K, which will undertake the process of establishing a Discourse forum
Therefore, be it further resolved that the above committee will compose a draft forum code of conduct, moderation policy, and proposed budget for hosting and maintaining the forum, to be voted upon at the next General Meeting, and
Therefore, be it finally resolved that upon the establishment of the forum and approval of the code of conduct, the Member Engagement and Communications Committees will coordinate a process for giving Philly DSA members access to the forum.
