Bulletin: Democracy is Complicated

Democracy is complicated, and unfortunately for readers who enjoy the bulletin’s normal political fare, we have been forced to turn most of this bulletin over to preparations for the Philly DSA convention.

Democracy is complicated, and unfortunately for readers who enjoy the bulletins normal political fare, we have been forced to turn most of this bulletin over to preparations for the Philly DSA convention on June 26–27.

We did want to highlight two events coming this week. First, at 10am on Saturday, Philly DSA members are headed to Love Park to stand in solidarity with AFSCME DC 33 and DC 47 in their fight for a fair contract. These unions represent thousands of city workers, many of whom are essential workers who kept the city running through the pandemic. (You should also sign our petition in support!)

Next Wednesday, theres an “End Toxic Schools” rally in Harrisburg supporting State Rep Elizabeth Fiedler's plan to direct federal recovery funds to clean up Philly schools. If you missed our event about the Green Schools/Good Jobs legislation last week with Fiedler and PFT organizers, you can view it on YouTube.

Ok, on to the convention content...

Convention Credentialling & Draft Agenda

To verify their voting status, all members need to RSVP to the Convention 2021 event on our website. The deadline for appeals to credentialling issues is the morning of the convention, and the deadline to request an absentee ballot is noon the day before the convention. RSVP today!

National Delegate elections in progress

Voting for delegates from Philly to the DSA national convention ends at the end of the day on Saturday, June 12. If you are a Philly DSA member, your should have received a link last Saturday, June 5 via OpaVote. Follow that link and vote!

To learn more about the voting process and our National Delegate candidates, visit National Delegate Voting.

Nominations still open for Steering Committee

The Steering Committee consists of four officers (chair, vice-chair, secretary and treasurer), along with four committee chairs, and six at-large members. We encourage members to nominate themselves as early as they are able, to leave time to resolve any unforeseen disputes. Nominations will close at 11:59 PM on Wednesday, June 16.

Steering Committee Candidate Forum, June 22

This forum will be a chance for members to meet and ask questions of candidates running for elected positions, and for candidates to make their case to the membership.

Questions for candidates must be submitted ahead of time through this form; questions will not be solicited at the event.
