Bernie Sanders’ failure to capture the Democratic nomination in 2020 is open to two interpretations. On the one hand, it was a triumph: a democratic socialist came within a hair’s breadth of winning the nomination of a major US political party–once described as “history’s second-most enthusiastic capitalist party.” On the other hand, it was a defeat: the party establishment successfully broke Bernie’s momentum, largely with the support of middle-class suburban voters. After two presidential campaigns and a growing number of down-ballot victories, socialists must reconcile these facts of electoral politics. Join us, as we debate the opportunities and pitfalls of attempting to crash the Democratic Party.

American cities are burning, and the nation remains in the grip of sprawling pandemic. The end of the Bernie Sanders revolution has created further uncertainties about how the Left should respond to a looming political crisis.

This juncture also presents us with an opportunity. Every day, more and more people come to the realization that the problems we face are systemic in nature. Will 2020 represent a new wave of defeats–or can we triumph in this era of instability?

Join Philly DSA this Summer for a Virtual Home School! Over three sessions, we’ll analyze the economic, political, ecological, and racial crises facing the United States; ask if we’ve entered a new historical period, distinct from the previous neoliberal age; and debate whether or not socialists can continue to work with the Democratic Party in the post-Bernie moment.

Note: Sessions do not require registration or prior reading!
