Karl Kautsky is a casualty of history. If he is remembered at all today, it is likely for Lenin’s denunciation of him, but in his own time he was the leading thinker of the Second International. His most influential political work, The Road to Power, caused a stir within German social democracy for proclaiming a new era of revolution, and provided inspiration for the Bolsheviks. How does Kautsky frame the relationship between democracy, socialism and revolution? Did he really betray his earlier convictions, as Lenin claimed?
