Having retaken the majority in the House of Representative, Democrats are feeling the heat to respond to the public’s demand for Medicare for All.
Already, they’ve made promises to hold committee hearings on the policy, and it seems like a CBO report on single-payer healthcare is on its way. Importantly, Rep. Pramila Jayapal is planning on releasing an updated Medicare for All bill in the House imminently.
But with powerful donors lined up in opposition and prominent Democrats either cagily supporting Medicare for All or actively attempting to undermine it with counterfeit copycat legislation, it’s clear that we cannot trust the Democrats to give the people what we overwhelmingly demand.
Our job is to make it clear that we will accept nothing less than a single-payer healthcare plan that meets our campaign’s five underlying principles:
It must be a single, public program — not a patchwork. It must provide comprehensive coverage — that includes dental, vision, hearing, abortion, and all other necessary services. It must be free at the point of use — no fees, copays, no deductibles. It must be truly universal — all residents must be guaranteed an equal standard of care, including the undocumented. It must include a generous jobs program — with severance, jobs training, and retirement assistance for all impacted workers.
Long-time Democratic Socialist, Sanders Institute Fellow, and leader in the Healthy California single-payer campaign Michael Lighty will be in Philadelphia to speak about the current political and economic crisis, why Democratic Socialism is the answer to Trump and how the demand for Medicare for All has the potential to galvanize a mass working-class base in the next two years.
The forces lined up against us are powerful. In fact, we face the most entrenched ruling-class opposition in the world.
So please, join us. This event will help give you the tools you need to be a strong advocate for single-payer healthcare in your workplace, your school and your neighborhood.
Remember: while the elite have a number of advantages, we have the clarity and political courage that comes with knowing that we are many and they are few.
