Virtual Night School: Lesser-Evilism

As American socialists are faced with two deeply flawed candidates — Donald Trump, an open bigot who has led the US into the worst economic crisis in a generation, and Joe Biden, a senator with a lifelong record of legislating neoliberalization — the debate over the lesser of two evils has become salient once again.

Some argue that Trump and the GOP represent too grave a threat to the foundations of our democratic institutions, and therefore socialists must do everything they can to help Biden win. Others see no opportunity for the left to influence Biden and do not want DSA to support either candidate. In this night school, we will discuss how socialists should orient not just themselves but their organizational resources in national elections without a progressive option.

This Night School will be organized as a debate over the question: “should socialists support moderates against conservatives at the national level?” The session will include brief presentations from speakers on both sides of the question, followed by an open discussion.

This Fall, Philly DSA will be offering a series of virtual Night Schools, with a focus on the major questions facing the socialist movement in these uncertain times. We’ll consider the implications of the upcoming election for progressive politics, explore the catastrophic impact of the COVID pandemic on our educational system, and discuss the possibilities that emerge from this ongoing political crisis.

Night Schools are free and open to all, regardless of previous experience. There are no assigned readings.
