The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by a catastrophic economic crisis, prompting many commentators to liken its effects to the Great Depression. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there have also been widespread calls for a broad, transformative approach echoing the New Deal–a series of programs that led to massive shifts in public policy, economics, and labor. Does COVID-19 provide a means for agitating around socialist demands? Should we fight for a NewNew Deal, a new age of public support for the working class? Or, will our moment be remembered as a missed chance, a lost opportunity to challenge the ruling economic ideology?
