With union density at historic lows, many Americans have little direct experience of the labor movement. In this session of Night School, we'll break down the basics of how unions work, what collective bargaining means, and how unions can fight for far more than "just" better wages and working conditions.
As a historical example, we'll look back at the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, a majority-Black union that pioneered an early version of "civil rights unionism" under the leadership of A. Phillip Randolph, a Socialist and organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. No assigned readings, just bring your hot takes.
