“Populism” is everywhere. It’s a punching-bag for pundits, responsible for everything from Brexit to Trump to Bernie Sanders. For some leftists, it’s a way out of the Left’s fourty-year retreat. Left populists argue that “the people” or “the 99%” is a more useful political frame than older Marxist class categories. Is left populism the way out of neoliberal dystopia, or just another symptom of it?
For this session of night school, we’ll be debating the question, “should socialists be populists?”
