Across the globe, demagogues have risen to power on the promise of protecting national interests. Trump's "Make America Great Again," Orbán's “For Us, Hungary Is First!” and Bolsonaro's "Brazil Above Everything" resonated with large swaths of the populace who have been abandoned by the neoliberal order.
As many workers in the industrialized world see their jobs shipped overseas, trade protectionism appears to be the only viable solution to restoring economic stability. However, as Matthew Klein and Michael Pettis convincingly demonstrate in their new book Trade Wars are Class Wars, exiting the global economy is not the answer. Instead, reducing income inequality domestically helps workers around the world.
