Indigenous People's Day | Bulletin

This weekend marks the fifth annual Indigenous People’s Day in the city of Philadelphia, which sits on Lenni-Lenape land.

Friend --

This weekend marks the fifth annual Indigenous People’s Day in the city of Philadelphia, which sits on Lenni-Lenape land. On Monday, October 11, Indigenous People’s Day Philly is hosting a celebration of art, music, and dance at Shackamaxon (Penn Treaty Park) with Indigenous artists, vendors, and Lenape guests. For more information, visit their website. See below for more events you can take part in this weekend leading up to Monday.

IPD Philly opposes the lawsuit against Mayor Kenney’s administration to restore the celebration of Columbus Day. They’re asking for signatures on a petition against this lawsuit and to ensure that Indigenous Peoples are included in further decision-making on related issues.

Please note, Philly DSA is not a cosponsor of these events.

This week in unions

  • 1400 Kellogg’s workers are on strike across the country including workers in Lancaster, PA. Members of our Labor Branch are heading to Lancaster on Saturday to join the 1pm rally. If you’re interested in attending, please contact David McMahon ([email protected]), who is helping coordinate rides.
    • If you’re not able to make it but would still like to support, donate to their strike fund.
    • Workers will be on the picket line 24/7 until the strike is over, so if the 1pm rally time doesn't work for you, feel free to head over anyway.

  • A group of Care Workers for Adults with Disabilities in Philadelphia, supported by EWOC, delivered their petition to management last Friday, with demands for better wages, working conditions, and safety. Please boost their posts from Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter so management knows the eyes of Philadelphia are on them!
  • In huge news, 90% of eligible IATSE members voted in their strike authorization, and a whopping 98% voted YES to authorize a strike. Stay tuned for ways to support these workers if they do end up going on strike.

To Get Involved: If you’re interested in supporting workers who want to organize, organizing your workplace, supporting workers and unions taking collective action, or in building relationships with rank and file union members and leaders, email [email protected]
