    Bernie 2020 Mass Canvass: Frankford

    Unity Hall

Please bring a fully charged phone if you can! We'll be using miniVAN, which you can download as an app for free!

Back in February, our chapter voted overwhelmingly to endorse Bernie Sanders because he is the only candidate in the race who will fight for our values. From Medicare for All to the Green New Deal to his Housing for All plan, Bernie has consistently championed programs to build working class power and fight the massive inequality plaguing America today.

Join us at our next Bernie 2020 Mass Canvass! This is an opportunity to continue our work building support for Bernie's campaign in earnest.

Do you know a friend who's curious about DSA? A member of your union who you've been trying to radicalize? A coworker who complains about how all politicians are crooks? Bring them! All levels of experience are welcome - there will be a training before you head to the doors and new canvassers will be paired with more experienced door knockers!

These mass canvasses are the most important way we can have face-to-face conversations with working people about the shortcomings of our capitalist system and how Bernie is the ONLY candidate offering solutions that address the needs of the working class.

Transportation: the best way to get to Unity Hall is to take the Market Frankford Line (the El) to Church Station and walk a few blocks from there!

Backer, professor of educational foundations and policy studies at West Chester University and a DSA member, will give a presentation looking at socialist approaches to school funding inequality in the Philadelphia region. The presentation will provide a quick overview of the socialist perspective, the funding inequality problem in Philadelphia schools, and contrast recent attempts to equalize this disparity with more socialist recommendations and demands. The event is open to the public.

For this session, we'll be reading two major texts by the famed writer Rosa Luxemburg. Despite an untimely death at the age of 47, Luxemburg has been a persistent influence on political theory and a touchstone for a number of crucial debates in the history of socialism. Marxism and Politics Lecture Series: Anton Jäger, Populism Beyond Identity

    Golkin Room, Houston Hall

Join PHL DSA for our Marxism and Politics Lecture Series.  We are bringing political analysts and writers to Philadelphia to give seminars on their recent work. These lectures cover a variety of topics, but they share a common historical materialist lens by which to understand and analyze political struggles.

The 2016 U.S. presidential election witnessed the widespread proliferation of the term "populism." The American mainstream media labeled both Donald Trump—a xenophobic billionaire—and Bernie Sanders—a self-identified democratic socialist—populists because of their opposition to economic elites. A similar trend became visible in Europe, where liberal commentators sorted both left- and rightwing parties into the "populist" basket, mainly in the aftermath of the continent’s Eurocrisis. This usage is symptomatic of the now confused meaning of the term, which has altered considerably since its first American use in 1891. "Populism" no longer refers to a style of class-based politics anchored in mass parties that characterized the late 19th century. In fact, today, “populism” is not about class or party democracy at all. In his lecture, Anton Jäger will map out the everchanging meanings of the term, describe its new form as an “antiparticularist identity politics” hostile to party formation,   and offer a way forward for a populism beyond identity.

    End-of-year General Meeting and Fundraiser

    William Way Ballroom

At General Meetings we get together to hear reports from projects and committees, set local policy and work priorities, and to debate and vote on resolutions. The assembled membership is the ultimate decision-making body of the local, so participation is crucial.

At the December General Meeting, we will be looking back on the year and all we worked on as a chapter in 2019, and looking forward to the year to come. After wrapping up business during the meeting, we'll celebrate with food, drinks, and music during our end-of-year fundraiser.

    Draft General Meeting Agenda

    Timeline:
