Philly DSA is entirely member-funded and relies on contributions from members like you to support our work and campaigns. These dues are used to pay recurring maintenance costs like this website, as well as events like meetings and socials. We strongly encourage a monthly contribution when possible, but these dues are entirely voluntary, and we appreciate any amount that you can commit to. Click here to pay local dues.
We would love to connect you with one of our more experienced chapter members and give you a chance to tell us a little more about yourself, your skills, your interests, as well as give you a space to ask questions and find out more about how to get involved in ways that are meaningful to you. Just fill out this form and we'll be in touch!
Every month our Member Engagement Committee hosts a New Member Meeting packed with tons of valuable information about what we do and how to get involved. This is also a great way to meet and make connections with other DSA-curious people as well as longtime members! Check out our Events calendar to find out when our next NMM is happening.
Stay up to date on our active campaigns, upcoming events, socials, meetings, and more. We try to keep it pretty light, so you won't get a lot of emails from us; promise! Sign up here.
Did you know that more than 600 DSA members have joined our Slack workspace? It’s true! Slack is the primary way many DSA members communicate. We use the program to share local news and events, discuss ideological questions, and plan meetings. Please fill out our Slack Request Form to request an invitation to our Slack workspace.

Democratic socialists believe that both the economy and society should be run democratically—to meet public needs, not to make profits for an elite few. To achieve this goal, we believe that many structures of our government and economy must be radically transformed through greater economic and social democracy so that ordinary Americans can have a say in how our lives are structured in the workplace, our schools, and neighborhoods.
Because DSA nationally is what we call a broad-tent “multitendency” organization, we have no holy books or martyrs. There is no one essay or strategy article you must read and agree with to be a DSA member. In fact, we draw our strength from the diversity of our ideas and our rigorous commitment to democratic practice.
DSA holds a national convention every two years that is open to all members where we join together to vote on priorities and to elect the National Political Committee (NPC), the board of members who steer the organization in between conventions.
Philly DSA also holds a convention every two years, usually just before the national convention, where we also vote on priorities, elect delegates to the national convention, and elect our local Steering Committee, the board that runs the local.
We have a quarterly General Membership Meeting where committees report back on their work, and committees meet more frequently in between general meetings.
We have a Slack Workspace, it works a lot like Discord or any other instant messaging app with different channels to sort conversations. We use this app to share local news and events, discuss ideological questions, and plan meetings. Email [email protected] to request an invitation to our Slack workspace.
You can also join our mailing list here.
That depends.
If you have an idea for a project that might fall under the umbrella of one of our existing committees it would be best to email the chair of the committee or attend one of the committee meetings to propose your idea.
For example, you’d like to start a reading group on Das Kapital or the History of the Russian Revolution? Great! Talk to the Political education Committee.
If you have an idea for a project that doesn’t already have a team working on it, consider drafting a resolution!
