Bulletin: Re-elect Larry Krasner

The Philly DSA Steering Committee and Electoral Committee would like to express support for Larry Krasner in the May 18 Democratic primary election for Philadelphia District Attorney.

The Philly DSA Steering Committee and Electoral Committee would like to express support for Larry Krasner in the May 18 Democratic primary election for Philadelphia District Attorney.

While there are structural limitations on the office of District Attorney, Larry Krasner has made positive changes during his first term in office: he has exonerated dozens of wrongfully convicted Philadelphians, eliminated cash bail for misdemeanors, and shown a unique willingness to prosecute police officers for misconduct. This approach has had national impact, as progressive candidates for District Attorney in jurisdictions across the country have run for office and won, following the Krasner model.

Krasner’s challenger, on the other hand, has run a campaign based on the desire to create a harsher and more punitive DA’s office in Philadelphia. Allowing such a candidate to replace Krasner would be a disaster, especially at a time when institutional progress on the issues of racial justice and law enforcement seems possible.

Re-nominating and re-electing Larry Krasner will signal that working people in Philadelphia have rejected the false dichotomy between a safe city and a more humane criminal justice system. More importantly, it’s something we can do to reduce the number of people victimized by a broken and unfair system. For these reasons, we strongly encourage Philly DSA Members and all Philadelphians to support Larry Krasner on Tuesday, May 18.

  • Coming up on May 23 at 4:00 pm: a DSA webinar with APWU Vice President Debby Szeredy on Postmaster DeJoy’s indefensible ten-year plan to “reform” the USPS by making it worse and then privatizing it.
