Bulletin: Bi-weekly Poster

We’re back with some great news: the guest speaker for our December General Meeting is none other than award-winning journalist and former Bernie Sanders speechwriter David Sirota!

Editor’s note: The Philly DSA Bulletin Team would like to sincerely thank cofounder / editor / writer / proofreader / NationBuilder admin / right midfielder / all-around good guy Jeremy Wheatley, who I think has clicked “Send” on every single Bulletin since early 2018, as he steps down to spend more time with his wife and two kids. Writing these will be a lot less fun without you.

Happy belated Thanksgiving! We took a week off, and hope you didn’t miss your biweekly bulletin too much. We’re back with some great news: the guest speaker for our December General Meeting is none other than award-winning journalist and former Bernie Sanders speechwriter David Sirota!

Since the 2020 primary, Sirota has transformed his popular “BERN Notice” campaign newsletter into a one-of-a-kind Substack publication, The Daily Poster. The Daily Poster, unlike most Substacks, isn’t a blog or personal column (or... Bulletin); it’s a fledgling investigative journalism project with multiple writers and contributors that aims to uncover the would-be secrets of the corporate elite by, as Sirota is fond of saying on Twitter, reading SEC documents and watching C-SPAN videos.

Here are a few of the stories the Poster has broken over the past month alone:

RSVP to our upcoming GM to hear Sirota talk Bernie, Biden, Trump, and the future of journalism.

Next General Meeting Scheduled for Sunday December 20

It’s the December General Meeting & Holiday Fundraiser! We'll be voting on resolutions submitted by members, electing a new Member Engagement committee chair, and raising funds for the local.

We'll be revisiting last year's very successful T-shirt design contest, where you vote with your dollars. Last year, after all the legal votes were counted, we all went home with the iconic (now vintage) “Bernie Grandpa” t-shirt. Who will win this year?

IT COULD STILL BE YOU!

Submit by December 6, and come to the meeting on December 20 — the design that gets the most donations will be made into a limited-run Philly DSA shirt!

This Week in Unions

Are you a union worker affected by the coronavirus crisis? Are you organizing in your shop or workplace to demand higher safety and sanitation standards? PHLDSA’s Labor Commission is convening a series of calls where representatives from unions in the greater Philadelphia area are discussing and coordinating responses. Email Paul Prescod for more information.

  • “I am sick and tired of hearing what is achievable and affordable from politicians who confer with an army of corporate lobbyists,” wrote BWMED Vice President Jed Dodd in a column for the Inquirer last week on continuing the Medicare for All fight in PA. “These same politicians enjoy first-class healthcare paid for by taxpayers and we have every right to expect the same.” ✊
  • Faculty at the University of the Arts won their union vote by an honestly astounding 255 to 2 (99%!) margin. “UArts faculty love teaching,” said photography professor John Woodin in a press release. “We want our students to succeed, and we have issues that will only be addressed if a strong faculty union represents us.”
  • The Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act is up for a vote, and IUPAT has assembled a coalition of unions and other groups to fight for it.
  • Finally, our condolences to the friends and family of Jim Moran, cofounder of the Philadelphia Area Project on Occupational Safety and Health and lifelong fighter for workers’ rights, who passed away November 21 at the age of eighty-one
