Bulletin: Labor Day, Every Day

It’s the first Thursday of September, which means that this weekend is the first weekend of September, which of course makes this Monday our official pick for the best day of the year: Labor Day! Celebrated in the United States since 1887, Labor Day honors the history of the American labor movement in the best possible way: by giving us a day off work.

Any other year, we’d be asking you out to Philly’s Labor Day Parade (last year’s Bulletin mentions thousands of local union members gathering along the waterfront). This year, there’s a rally with frontline workers at 10 am, but after that, the day is yours. Fire up the grill, have a drink with us in absentia, and get outside if you can — it’s supposed to be beautiful.

Save the Date: October General Meeting

Our next General Meeting is confirmed for Saturday, October 3. Our guest speaker is author Thomas Frank, whose most recent book, The People, No: A Brief History of Anti-Populism, looks at why political elites — on both sides of the aisle — seem to hate people. “Frank’s book is a manual for a left that wants to become truly popular,” writes Aaron Lake Smith in Jacobin’s review of the book.  “Every person involved in shaping the direction and tone of (left) campaigns should read this book — an ode to the forgotten ‘normie’ voter.” Click through to RSVP!

This Week in Unions

Are you a union worker affected by the coronavirus crisis? Are you organizing in your shop or workplace to demand higher safety and sanitation standards? PHLDSA’s Labor Commission is convening a series of calls where representatives from unions in the greater Philadelphia area are discussing and coordinating responses. Email Paul Prescod for more information.

  • The Philadelphia Federation of Teachers are out of contract, and while negotiations are set to continue for another two weeks, PFT President Jerry Jordan told the Inquirer that a strike is not off the table. “The district is attempting to shake down our membership,” Jordan said, “and I won’t allow it.”
  • Public pressure forced Trump-appointed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to walk back some planned changes at the USPS, but, amid staffing shortages, Philadelphians are waiting longer and longer for our mail. “We are months away from being efficient,” said National Association of Letter Carriers Keystone 157 President Joe Rodgers.
  • Temple University ran in-person classes for one week, single-handedly tripled the city’s COVID-19 positive test rate, and then went online again after pressure from the Department of Public Health and faculty and staff union TAUP. The decision comes two days after TAUP announced a bold “safety pledge” campaign regarding a potential stoppage of in-person work.
  • Finally, Your Philadelphia Union had a nice winning streak broken last night by a ridiculously fluky goal from the Columbus Crew’s Lucas Zelarayan. They drop to fourth in MLS’s Eastern Conference.
