The concept of “Neoliberalism” has seen many uses: as an obscure academic term, as a popular catchword among activists, and more recently, as a more informal political insult. Many people accept that the previous four decades represented a shift away from the “thirty golden years” of postwar prosperity and the welfare state. But, trillion-dollar state intervention in response to the COVID crisis–not to mention the right-populist revolt against “globalism”–might suggest that we are witnessing the death of the reigning neoliberal orthodoxy. Are we really entering a new, post-Neoliberal era? In this session of Night School, we’ll discuss the continued utility of the concept, and ask what it means to fight against neoliberalism in 2020.

Philly DSA Virtual Home School

American cities are burning, and the nation remains in the grip of sprawling pandemic. The end of the Bernie Sanders revolution has created further uncertainties about how the Left should respond to a looming political crisis.

This juncture also presents us with an opportunity. Every day, more and more people come to the realization that the problems we face are systemic in nature. Will 2020 represent a new wave of defeats–or can we triumph in this era of instability?

Join Philly DSA this Summer for a Virtual Home School! Over three sessions, we’ll analyze the economic, political, ecological, and racial crises facing the United States; ask if we’ve entered a new historical period, distinct from the previous neoliberal age; and debate whether or not socialists can continue to work with the Democratic Party in the post-Bernie moment.

Note: Sessions do not require registration or prior reading!
